Three trends that get the grid to 70% renewables by mid-century

Electricity system operators have contemplated how to respond to the challenge of the ever-growing renewables sector, but finally – change is imminent.

Utility system operators are now looking to solar and wind as a solution in their drive for more affordable reliability but are also realizing that the grid of the future needs some basic changes first, in addition to thinking about resource planning, pricing, and integration.

According to a survey of 1,600 stakeholders in 71 countries around the world, including transmission and distribution system and network operators, including investor-owned, publicly-owned, and cooperatively-owned utilities, and developers and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in the renewables industries, three major dynamics were raised to describe major trends that will get the grid to 70% renewables by mid-century.

4/5 of the respondents said the transition to a high renewables grid can happen by 2050 or sooner.
