What Type of Load Bank Solution Would Provide a Battery Load Tester?

Comrent is providing solutions for mission-critical power testing infrastructure.

When you test batteries using load banks, what type of equipment do you use? A battery load tester comes in many forms. Typically, a battery load tester is a portable solution available in capacities to 600 kilowatts. Many battery load testers can be carried or pushed on wheels.

NERC standards requires that Vented Lead-Acid and Nickel Cadmium systems be discharge tested every six years and Valve Regulated Lead-Acid (VRLA) batteries be tested every three years. IEEE recommends load testing stationary flooded / vented lead-acid and Ni-Cad stationary batteries every 5 years and VRLA batteries every 12-18 months.

In addition to batteries, DC equipment includes power supplies, thermocouples, solar modules and many consumer digital electronics. Some generators also function using direct current. Testing any of these components requires a DC load bank. You should look for battery load testers that enable maximum flexibility during testing. A compact and portable solution will simplify operation. Other meaningful features include easy-to-read meters, easy operator controls, over-temperature protection, cool-down period elimination and a master load control switch that allows for instantly applying or removing loads.
