How Big Data and Internet of Things (IoT) Impact Data Centers

Comrent is providing solutions for mission-critical power testing infrastructure.

As big data continues to expand at an exponential rate, big data experts are starting to consider how this rapid growth will impact data centers and data center technology.

90% of the world’s data today has been generated in the past two years and only continues to grow as the number of worldwide Internet users increases. As it currently stands, there are 2.5 billion Internet users worldwide, and a plethora of devices, including the Internet of Things (Fitbits, mobile phones, handheld cameras, watches, etc.) used by those individuals.

This exponential use of data has created larger computer and storage demands, as well as an increased demand for power and data management.

Data Center expert Jorge Balcells, who will be speaking at the Data Center World Global Conference and Expo next month, explains how data center managers and operators should be asking questions such as “Is the electrical infrastructure we have today (that is from years ago) able to cope with all data generated today? Can we cope to provide enough power?” as well as “Do you know where you get power to run your data center today? And in 5 or 10 or 15 years?”

To support today’s needs of compute and storage, we will need to have abundant sources of reliable, renewable, and energy efficient power.
