A hospital located in Northern California admitted last week that its electronic health record (EHR) system went down for a week after its data center air conditioning failed.
With the system down, the hospital’s on-staff clinicians were unable to access patient medical records and medical treatments ended up being postponed or cancelled.
The hospital also admitted the health system’s data center crashed back in mid February after two HVAC units contained in an off-site data center were to blame after one burned out, and the backup then quickly overheated and failed.
Despite the fact that patient care was not affected by the outage, according to the hospital, many patients had to postpone their much-needed radiation treatments and an inability to access patients’ records left clinicians with limited resources.
